Fifty Shades of F’d Up

Well. Let me start out by saying I have some major reading ADD.

Remember how on my summer reading list I included Fifty Shades of Grey somewhat reluctantly? Mostly because I wanted to see what the hype was all about?

I’m sorry but a book about a virgin girl who is drawn to a hot, young, controlling billionaire who is into whips and chains and then turns the virgin girl into a freak nasty…. how can that not get your attention?

So, on Monday night, despite being in the middle of a different book that I was actually really enjoying (this is where the ADD comes in) my curiosity got the best of me and I downloaded the first book to the iPad (because I obviously couldn’t wait until the next day to actually go to the book store).

As of last night I am about 2/3 through it and I’m somewhat impressed.

I know a lot of people have criticized the actual writing, and I could see how they would, but honestly – I don’t even  notice it because of the steaminess of the book. Christian Grey is pretty distracting. And even though you kind of don’t want to like him because of his controlling ways, you cant help it because the author gives you a good glimpse of how he is a good guy.

And the entire time I’ve been reading, I cant help but think of Bella & Edward. The clumsy, inexperienced girl. The mysterious hot guy, the random good guy friend of hers on the sideline trying to win her over. It’s all kind of there. Like an adult version of Twilight (minus the vampires). All the times you got frustrated reading Twilight because you wanted Edward to just ravish Bella right then and there and he doesn’t? That’s this, and I like it.

I cant help but think about a few things either….

Like how the hell the author comes up with this stuff. I mean, kind of makes you wonder right?

And how are they going to make this into a movie that is appropriate enough to not be rated X? Are they going to have to leave out some stuff? It just wouldn’t be the same if they did.

And lastly, I cant help but picture all these women in their mid 50’s sitting and reading this with their little cup of coffee, reading glasses, and pant suits blushing at Starbuck’s thinking “oh my!”

The only downfall? It has seriously cut into my blogging time. Hangin’ with Christian Grey has taken over my blogging time slightly.

Don’t worry, tomorrow will be back to usual delicious food, hard workouts, and brown dogs.

———————————————–

  • Have you read it? What did you think?
  • I’m dying to know, if you have no desire to read it – what turns you away from it? If you have already (or want to) read it, what makes you attracted to it?
  • Since the movie is in the works, what actor would you like to see cast as Christian Grey? What actress as Ana?
When she talks about Christian’s hair in the book, I cant help but picture the delicious Bradley Cooper. I honestly don’t know who would be good as Ana….anyone would be better than Kristen Stewart.

  2. My wife is reading it right now…I am just hoping I might reap some of the benefits. A guy can always dream, right?

  3. I read all 3 of those books in about a week. They’re so addicting! I thought the 2nd one was the best. And I agree with you, they reminded me a bit of Twilight but for adults. There’s no way they can make this movie and not change a bunch of things and I will be looking forward to it a lot less if Kristen Stewart plays Ana!

  4. I’m on the 3rd book now and have loved them all! I can’t wait to see how it ends. About the movie..I don’t know who I’d like to see play him. The guy that played in the Vow and Dear John might be a good fit..

  5. lol, i read these a while ago and now its exploded and I cant believe how many women are into it…that being said. I think the writing was absolutely terrible but the story was intriguing and I couldnt put it down…it actually started as twilight fan fiction so thats probably why you see the similarities. I just hated the repetitiveness of the OH MY and I laughed at the “dramatic” parts but all in all its a FUN read and the sexyness of it is entertaining. im VERY interested to see in how they put it into movie form…regardless, they are going to make a killing off of this movie.

    • i agree!! haha i know, as i am reading it i am like dang there are 2 more books… how much more stuff could the think up haha… i JUST read an article about how it started out as a twilight fan fiction too. makes sense!

  6. Oh you are so funny. I’ve seen a lot of buzz about that book, but probably not my thing. When I get into a good book, it definitely sucks up my blogging time too!! Lol.

  7. I’m reading the first one and haven’t really gotten too into it yet. I’m really hoping I start to get into it like everyone else seems to be.

  8. funny you should mention twilight…..

Fifty Shades of Grey was originally entitled “Masters of the Universe” and was Twilight Fanfiction, with Christian being Edward and Ana being Bella.

The Twilight lawyers sent a cease and desist letter, so se had to pull them.
She then changed the names, and edited out the sparkling vampires, and released it as an Ebook, and the rest as you may say is history.

You can Google it if you don’t believe me. They even ran software on it (like they do in university to test for plagiarism, and found an 87% similarity to the fan fiction.

    • i just read an article similar to that actually! makes sense… i could definitely see how that is the case!

  9. I don’t really have any interest in reading this, but I think your review is funny!! It’s crazy how the reactions to this are soo mixed. I have read so many people who just think its crazy over the top and annoying and others who just love it. I guess that is kind of what makes a book popular though is how much it can polarize people! haha….And I agree…how the heck are they gonna make it into a movie? From what I heard (you included) that would be pretty impossible without taking most of it out?! HA!

    • I’m with you, Cinnamon! :)

    • haha i could definitely see that. I actually was planning on steering clear of it originally but my nosey/curious self got sucked into it. as usual. i even held off on the twilight books for years because i didnt want to give into the hype. Sigh, I’m kind of a sucker! haha.
I know. The movie will be interesting, but in a way maybe they should just leave it alone. not every popular book needs to be a movie!!!

  10. I am on the third book and I am obsessed with it! Yes, the writing could be better, but I just love it! I don’t know what it is about it…I just can’t get enough!

I freaking hate Bella and Edward and I freaking love Ana and Christian! Don’t let your ADD stop you from reading all 3 books. Love them!

  12. Ihad too much fun reading your post and everyone’s comments. I keep hearing about this trilogy, but haven’t read it yet…I am verrrry tempted to buy it for my kindle…But I was at the library this weekend and got my hands on the first book as it was going through the reserves. Cracked me UP!!! The woman sounds like such a little girl…and there was so much repetition in the quick few sentences I read. I really don’t wanna pay money for this…lol But of course, my first thought for the guy who should play Christian (even though I haven’t read these books lol) was Stephen Moyer. Gimme a break ; P

  13. I had no intention on reading this, but with all the recent hype I may have to! I was shocked to find out what it was “about” because so many of the older women I work with are obsessed!
